April Quilt Group

We had a great quilt group meeting on Thursday. It was so fun to have Sunny, Judy, and Roxanne back with us after missing them the last couple of months. Laurie, Bobbi, Wendy, and Lori were also in attendance. We missed Barbel, Kim, and Shauna who were all out of town and Shari who was up to her elbows packing boxes for her move. Here is the rundown of the night's meeting:

Judy brought her darling flannel baby blanket, "Framed Four-Square" to show. The flannel fabrics were adorable and perfect for the new grandbaby arriving in just a few days. She also showed us fabric kits that were a combination panel with added quilt blocks on two borders. The fabrics were darling, one for a boy and one for a girl. With two more grandbabies coming she is in all out "Grandma" mode. She is also in "Mother of the Bride" mode as her daughter Becky will marry Jameson Ranck on July 31st. We are so happy for all her good news. Judy also brought us some beautiful Christmas fabric from the shop owned by her dear friend in Colorado, who sadly has to close because of the economy. Thank you so much Judy for all your sharing and enthusiasm!

Sunny has been quite the traveler the last few months. She has a new grandbaby born to her daughter Mary in Utah, and she also had a chance to visit family in both Texas and California. She brought us darling foreign fabric fromall these places. She also shared an idea she had for a quilting book. It will have patterns that can be personalized in size, style, and border. She will propose her ideas to the Martingale Printing Co. With her creativity and stylle it will be a best seller for sure. Thank you too Sunny for taking all the pictures this month!
Bobbi is also gearing up for major "Grandma" mode. Her daughter Alissa is expecting her first baby at the end of April. How exciting!
Wendy wasa really on the ball and finished her patriotic blocks for the American Hero quilt a month early! Way to go Wendy!

Roxanne came in bearing a pile of quilts to share. In between all her family's health issues, her schooling, teaching, and church work she somehow found the time to finish 3 quilts. One was the French country birthday quilt many of us contributed to a few years ago. Lori and I were both trying to convince Roxanne that it would be just perfect to display in our homes. :) She also showed a fabulous Halloween circle quilt, and a Patriotic quilt that we all swapped blocks for a few years back. It was just beautiful! Her son Sam has convinced her he needs that quilt for his room.

Lori shared a surprise quilt she had forgotten about. She and her dear friend had sewn these pinwheel style quilt tops together as a fun project. When her friend moved Lori let her take her quilt top. Lori had completely forgotten about it until she received the beautiful quilt in the mail from her friend, all finished and bound, for her birthday. It had a sweet label on the back honoring their friendship. She also shared a beautiful Americana quilt that she's donating to American Hero Quilts.

Laurie - I shared a couple of books for weird stuffed creatures you can make with fleece and socks. This is a project I will do with my son, Ian, who is into the "ugly doll" type creatures. For my Hostess Quilt I had mercy on everyone and changed from my "plan A" - Around the Block quilt that only had standard pieced patterns and not foundation patterns that would have made the project so much easier to "plan B" - the Northwest themed going away quilt we made for Carol Ann, Barbel, and Shari. I have secretly coveted this quilt from afar yet I have no plans to move anywhere in the near future. This way I can stay home and still have the going away quilt! What a deal! Although I think Sunny would have preferred the pieced pattern for Around the Block to the 100+ pieced salmon, I have assured her a common trout, crab or clam less than 25 pieces would do just as nicely. Colors to use are the deep, rich blues, greens, browns, etc. Whatever colors you used for the last going away quilts is just great. The size is 12" finished (12 1/2" unfinished).

Happy Birthday to Judy, Lori and Wendy this month! They were all thrilled with their birthday fat quarters - polka dots for Lori and Wendy, and blues for Judy! We hope your day was special.

We had great fun unveiling all the blocks for Barbel's Halloween quilt. They all turned out so cute and were perfectly coordinated in color. We hope you love your Halloween quilt Barbel! We can't wait to see it all finished.

May Assignments:

  • 2 - 12 1/2" (unfinshed size) Patriotic Americana Blocks
  • 2 - 12 1/2" (unfinished size) cream background blocks
  • Laurie's Hostess Square (whichever block you made for the previous Northwest quilts)
  • Barbel's Birthday Fat Quarter (stay tuned for color/style)

Laurie's Ice Cream Sandwich Dessert

Line a 9 x 13 dish with 8-9 ice cream sandwiches (I used mint chocolate chip flavored ones from Safeway). You may need to creatively cut up the last sandwich to fill in any gaps. Spread cool whip over the top of the sandwiches. Shred a Hershey bar over the top. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the chocolate. Drizzle with chocolate syrup. Cover dish with foil and freeze for 3-4 hours. Cut up to serve and drizzle chocolate syrup on the plate around each piece for decoration and extra dipping. This recipe can be made very low calorie by using Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches and non-fat, no-calorie whipped topping. You can be creative with the toppings. Caramel would be good too or any kind of chopped up candy bar. Enjoy!
